I am Pisino. Normally, I leave the frantic barking and tail-wagging commentary to Blu and Niki. As a sleek black cat and the undisputed chief of the SnoutScoop pack, I prefer to observe the canine realm from a comfortable, sunlit height. But occasionally, a dog comes along whose legend is so undeniable, so magnificently unorthodox, that even I must pause, incline my head, and pay respect.

That dog is Peggy. You might know her as Dogpool from Marvel Studios’ blockbusting superhero film Deadpool & Wolverine. Or perhaps you know her by her previous official title: Britain’s Ugliest Dog. Either way, Peggy’s journey from an overlooked puppy in East Yorkshire to a Hollywood red carpet icon is a story that proves true star power comes from embracing exactly who you are.

The Humble Beginnings of a Unique Queen

Peggy is what is affectionately known as a "Pugese"—a cross between a Pug and a Chinese Crested dog. Adopted in 2018 by her loving human, Holly Middleton, Peggy was the runt of an accidental litter. With her largely hairless body, tiny tufts of white hair on her head and paws, and a tongue that permanently lolls out of the side of her mouth, she was never destined to fit standard dog show aesthetics.

As detailed by the Hull Daily Mail, Holly fell in love with Peggy instantly. To her family in Leven, East Yorkshire, Peggy wasn’t strange; she was utterly beautiful, sweet-natured, and cuddly. She lived a quiet, pampered life of sofa naps and backyard trots—completely oblivious to the fact that her unique looks were about to take the world by storm.

Winning the Crown: Britain’s Ugliest Dog

In late 2022, print firm ParrotPrint launched a nationwide competition to find the UK’s least aesthetically gifted pooch. Holly entered Peggy for a bit of fun, never expecting her gentle rescue dog to become an overnight sensation. As reported by Lancs Live and The Scotsman, Peggy was officially crowned Britain’s Ugliest Dog in January 2023.

The prize included a luxurious pampering session and a professional photoshoot. But while the headline said "ugliest," the public reaction was pure warmth. People didn’t laugh at Peggy with cruelty; they fell hopelessly in love with her. Her story highlighted how incredible rescue dogs can be, regardless of whether they meet traditional standards of symmetry.

When Hollywood Came Calling

Enter Ryan Reynolds. While prepping the third installment of the Deadpool franchise, Reynolds was searching for a very specific dog to play Dogpool (also known in the script as Mary Puppins). As documented on Peggy’s Wikipedia page, Reynolds saw Peggy’s photos online during the beauty contest coverage and knew instantly that she was the one.

According to CNN and official updates from Marvel, Reynolds described Peggy as the animal manifestation of Wade Wilson himself—quirky, slightly battered by life, but possessing an undeniable, magnetic heart. Peggy underwent specialized animal actor training to prepare for her action scenes, proving that even a dog with zero hair and a rogue tongue can master movie set discipline.

During the film’s press tour and London premiere, Peggy walked the red carpet in custom outfits, strutting alongside Reynolds and co-star Hugh Jackman. As covered by HOLA!, she stole every scene she was in—and every interview off-camera.
